Put all armies on the planet closest to the one you want to take and make sure you have ten more ships than it takes to conquer it. Quickly move more ships to that planet, or off of it to appear that it was an easy take.
* Encourage others to take flight. Sometimes non-stubborn campers will take flight when they see a big army coming towards them. Use this as a bluff only, don't let the newb win. This works best when you are the biggest and the next biggest is headed your way.
* Teach the newb. If you are like me and care more about the game than winning then never let a newb win if he suicides you. Eventually they will learn their mistake. Employing the fake-retreat helps this process along. Really retreating and giving them the win makes their learning process take so much longer.
* Domination. If you are playing 2 newbs, spread out quick. Leave the planets next to you for later. If you get enough planets without appearing weak, you will out produce both of your enemies. Time is on your side here. Be defensive until you've produced more ships then they have. Then take them out slowly with your back planets.
* Hide your real army. Be crafty in hiding your ships movements. I'm always impressed when I see a newb all but taking over an opponent and I go in to clean up without realizing I'm not alone.
* The 400 rule. Do I have to say that being in a stand off isn't winning? If you have more than 400 ships, there is no reason to not implement a strategy. Trying to out-smart other players is the most fun you can have in this game!
* Pay attention to everything. This is how you increase your skill. Make sure you'll win first in a 2v2 game by watching the other players while you win your 1v1. This involves knowing how many ships each planet cost before they were taken, and how many ships are being sent to it and from it.
* Be fast and aggressive. A ship that isn't attacking or defending during a war is an opportunity to lose. Always make sure just enough ships are on a planet to keep it and no more. Practicing this will help you defeat the computer nearly every time, and most 1v1's.
* Be bigger. In those crazy, evenly matched, all planets involved wars, just go for the bigger planets. This just works on newbs. If your opponent also doesn't care about the small ones, then perhaps beast mode can teach you a thing or two. Which brings me to my next point.
* Practice beast mode. This greatly helps your thinking-speed/reaction-time in the all planet wars. One of these strategy posts tells you how to beat it on the hardest level. I recommend that.
* Clean-ups. Practice knowing the right time to move in and clean up two players ignoring you. Too soon and you risk both turning on you, too late and your opponent will be too big. As above, if one player is obviously suiciding then finish him off first. If he doesn't learn the error of suiciding then the next game he might come after you. Mind I said 'finish' him off first, always start with who ever is bigger. The bigger will always be more fixated on killing off that last spec and not notice you on their tail. You don't want new armies coming in his zone of focus until you're assured the win.
* Allow for surrenders. Following a stubborn loser around the map when I've already assured a win just means I get to play less games. Once you catch up, take all of your armies off the planet they are about to hit and give them a second or two. After a few games they will see that surrendering is the noble way to go. Sometimes you get newbs that will surrender when they probably could have won.post updated on Nov 17, 2008 @ 7:16pm | | Re: How to win against newbs :: Nov 22, 2008 @ 2:29pm |
