nanno, how do you get the newbie to attack me every time?

Since 3 player is almost always won by the last person to act, how does everyone prevent losing forces while not giving up too much ground?

It's my womanly charm.  ;)

But don't worry... I got nailed a fair few times myself.  Good games tonight.  I'm sorry about the end there.  I got a phone call, so I was holding the iPod gizmo in one hand and the phone in the other--not pretty.  Bummer! because I felt sure I could have won that one, or at least given a very good battle.  And then I nearly dropped the gadget on the floor when I tried to hit "Leave" with my thumb, so I got stuck in that last fatal 1v1.  Oops.

Anyway, I do find that sometimes if I can get into a fray involving both enemies, then pull my ships out really fast, I can get the others to clash.  Usually this happens when a good player sees an opportunity to take empty border planets at the same time as a less-good player sends his fleets all the way across the screen to attack my cluster.  If I can move out quick enough, then both enemy forces will collide, leaving me the advantage.  Often you do have to get lucky in those situations, and you have to be quick in order to avoid being squished.

You probably noticed that I rarely leave a cluster unguarded near a good player.  I usually leave a considerable force in order to avoid giving a high-ranked admiral an easy win.  On the other hand, if it's a wreckless player (or someone I'm not sure about), I'm more likely to remove all ships because I'm more likely to receive an all-out frontal attack and just get wiped out.  But heck, I don't need to give you tips.  You're a better player than I am to be sure.  Good stuff!  =)

You're too kind, thanks for the games.  3 player is my worst game-type, so any tips are helpful.  I like that idea about putting a strong garrison near a good player.

I had been trying out pwnography's idea of leading the other two players toward each other by weakening the planets between them.  That kept backfiring on me though, the newbie kept thinking I was throwing all my forces at them and attacking me.

I usually like to just sit as still as possible and hope the other two players go at it.  I'm always afraid that if I leave any planet with too few forces, a new player is likely to throw his forces at it, then I'm toast.

Same with me. What I found works, and even won me a game when they ganged up on me and I had 2 (!) ships, is to get them fighting, take a nice little corner away from the action, and just wait it out. Normally they forget about you and then I think I sweeped the board with like 80 ships.

The longer the two of them fight it out the better, because you can sit and accumulate ships. Wait until one appears to have it wrapped up and then strike. Just don't go too soon because a lot of the time one person will be down to one planet, but it has a lot of forces and they retake half the map. You just have to evalute the situation to know when it's right.
