As for the stalemates, I'm just quoting myself from the 3 player strat section, "What I found works, and even won me a game when they ganged up on me and I had 2 (!) ships, is to get them fighting, take a nice little corner away from the action, and just wait it out. Normally they forget about you and then I think I sweeped the board with like 80 ships."
I've found that to work pretty well. And attacking your enemy in the beginning is also a very good tactic. I like to take a planet in the beginning as well, but I make sure I never lose enough that they could rush me. Then, if they do, I defend myself successfully and take their planets with only a few ships. On the other hand, if I see that they grab 2-3 planets, while I only grabbed 1, I'll hit them hard in the biggest ones first, then crush the rest. Of course, there's ways around this, which I've used if I noob it up and someone attacks me early.
