this guide was written for the new update so we don't have to explain every thing over to the new guys over and over again.
<font size="5">Basic Info</font>
Phil is the one and only developer for Galcon (Bow Before him)
Nanno is Phils wife she is the face of Galcon most complaints or anything social is through her.(dont upset her)
most forum users have been with community for a while Galcon for IPhone was released almost a year ago I believe August 08.
check member profiles to see how long they have been with the community
<font size="5">Ranking system</font>
Important please register your name <a href="http://www.galcon.com/forums/login/new.php">Click Here</a>
create and account with the name you choose to play on Galcon to keep people from stealing your name.
The ranking system can be found on this link <a href="http://www.galcon.com/iphone/ranks.php">Click Here.</a>
The ranking page contains the top x number of players in Galcon.
this page also has a link to "Your Stats" "2v2 Rank" and "Recent Games"
"Your Stats" contains a the list of games you have played against other people.
also on this page is ranking requirements which you can compare with your stats to see what is needed to rank up.
2v2 Stats are not an option at this time to view.
2v2 also has a separate ranking flag for its games and is not combined with your ranking flag and can only be viewed in 2v2 rooms.
the ranking system is on a 10 day cycle games drop off 10 days later.
ex. if you play and win a game at 3 o'clock today ten days from now that game drops off at 3 o'clock
there's not a mass drop off of games for one day
playing 4 free for all (ffa)
when playing ffa
win = the server counts it as beating 3 other players.
losing = the server counts it as losing to 1 person.
like wise surrendering in game and leaving counts as a loss to the overall winner.
<font size="5">Ranking Requirements</font>
to reach a different flag each flag has its own requirements.
it is possible to jump flags if you satisfy the requirements for flags about your next flag.
the requirements for flags include win percentage and weight.
the higher the flag the harder the requirements
Explanation of weight weight was implemented to keep cheating and easy ranking to a minimum.
it keeps players from playing the same person 30 times and ranking up.
every time you beat one person you gain 1 weight. you can get a max of 7 weight from 1 player.
ex. if you play Stormz 10 times you will gain 7 weight from him.
<font size="5">New Friend System</font>
Galcon has a growing community around it. The friend system started on the forums when you added a player on the forums you would see his name atop the server list if he was in and open server.
The new updates brings this option to the regular users inside the game.
the smiley face next to the player allows you to befriend them on the game and in the forums
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"> </a><a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"> </a>
<font size="3">Friend</font>
Clicking friend adds them to your friends list on the forums.
This also sends that player a firend request on the forum. if they would also like to befriend you.
if this user is in an open server there name will appear as the server at the top of the list
<font size="3">Ignore</font>
unconfirmed but is believed to be standard default for all users
<font size="3">Block</font>
clicking block makes the user not be able to befriend you and find you in servers
it keeps them from stalking and suiciding you
<font size="5">Chat Room Commands</font>
All you wanted to know about the chat room but were to afraid to ask
The first time you enter the chat room your name is assigned a color
it will be this color form now on no changing.
If some one says your name in the chat it is highlighted for your convenience
if your on the computer you will here a Bing noise to alert you.
also if you want to type some ones name type the first 2 letters and press tab it auto complete there name for you
Commands
/who = server responds with list of users in room
/me = action
/m "name" = private message to name specified
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"> </a>
Admin Commands
/mute "Name" = mutes user and puts line across there name
/unmute "Name" = unmutes name
admins cant be muted we mute are selves usually to show an away status

Joined: Sep 2, 2009 Posts: 3 Location: Somerset, NJ | Just discovered galcon 2 days ago and, like everyone else, I've fallen in love with it. I joined my first network games yesterday and had my butt handed to me... I've spent the last half hour browsing the forums and I have a few questions.
1) What are suicide and camping?
2) Are the servers all run by Phil & Nanno? Are these configured differently to allow different types of games (e.g. 2v2, 1v1, 0/2 and 0/4)? Is is acceptable to join any of these games or is it implied by the naming that a newbie shouldn't join some of these? (Not looking to **** anybody off, I don't want to join a game where I'm not wanted/welcome).
3) What are registered vs unregistered accounts? I think since I'm posting here I'm registered. Is that correct? | | Re: Guide for the Noobs: have questions? Ask here!! :: Sep 3, 2009 @ 8:42am |

2. You are welcome at any server, but try to choose servers which have your rank on them. This will give you a better gaming experience.
3. Unregistered accounts are accounts that have not been signed up on galcon.com. These are also not in the worldwide ranks.post updated on Sep 3, 2009 @ 8:43am | | Re: a few newbie questions :: Sep 3, 2009 @ 9:10am |

1) Suiciding is when someone has no interest in winning the game, but instead targets one other player repeatedly, usually because they don't like the other player's name, rank, or playing style; or to "punish" them for some perceived wrong. It's a foolish way to play and it ruins the game for everyone. Here's one thread about how to deal with suiciders.
http://www.galcon.com/forums/14/15/882/?cur=0
Often, new players are accused of "suiciding" because they accidentally pick a lot of fights they can't possibly win. I don't call this suiciding because it's not intentional (the noob would like to win the game, he just hasn't yet figured out how to pull it off). The key is to start learning the balance of the game and realize that you must pay close attention to your opponents' movements and ship counts.
Camping is when a player makes a habit of just sitting and hoping that the other players will do his job for him by killing each other off so he can sweep in for the victory. Occasionally this is a winning strategy, but if everyone employs it, it leads to boring stalemates (NEVER a good scenario). And a player who camps every game is frowned upon and usually ends up getting suicide bombed by some annoyed player. I have a great deal of admiration for players who jump in and keep the game moving at great risk to their own chances of a win.
2) Phil hosts all the servers, and yes they are configured differently to provide for different types of games. We have 1v1 servers which only allow two players, four-player free-for-all servers, and 2v2 servers which allow team games. The first number tells you how many people are on the server, while the second number tells you how many people can play on that server. For example, 0/2 and 0/4 means that these are 2-player and 4-player servers that are empty. You can join any type of game you want and there are no "rules" about which servers are for what level players. However, the flag displayed next to the server shows the average rank that is playing there. It would be wise for you to look for servers with either a green or yellow flag next to them so as to me more evenly matched. It does sometimes tick people off when you, little green guy, jump into a server with a bunch of admirals.
3) Unregistered players have never passworded their accounts and registered them here, which means that anyone can steal their accounts and play on them. Phil has made it a lot more obvious how to register with this update, so probably an awful lot of the unregistered users nowadays are unregistered intentionally. Often it's because they have a vulgar name or because they're doing a bit of dirty playing (teaming in free-for-all servers to help boost someone else's rank, etc.). If someone is really annoying, it's not uncommon for our "vigilantes" to register that person's name so they can't use it any more. You have nothing to fear... you can't post on this website unless you are registered. ;) | | Re: a few newbie questions :: Sep 4, 2009 @ 6:32am |

Thanks for the detailed answers. Two more questions:
1) Do I get more resources (ships) for keeping my "home" planet versus capturing other planets of the same size? Since I'm getting beaten so badly, I'm just trying to figure out how to stay alive while I try to determine my next step. (One rule I've already determined for myself is, just as in the martial arts, if you think too much in galcon, you're already dead. :-)
2) Is the algorithm for getting more ships general knowledge? I know the more planets you have, and the larger they are, the more you get, but I don't know the rate at which they appear and how much more a large planet gets you versus a medium or small. Or am I, again, thinking too much. :-)
Thanks again. | | Re: a few newbie questions :: Sep 4, 2009 @ 12:07pm |

It doesn't work like it does in the rest of the iPhone or iPod touch... if you press it once in Galcon, then it will stay pressed. So you have to press it again to get back to lowercase letters. | | Re: Guide for the Noobs: have questions? Ask here!! :: Apr 24, 2010 @ 5:05pm |
