Announcing the Cabin Fever 2v2 iPhone tournament!

Sorry it wasn't sooner, folks, but we've been crazy busy around here lately.

Anyhow, this tournament is going to be different from previous tourneys in that it is the best individual 2v2 player. Here's how it will work: everyone who signs up for the tourney will be assigned to a server. They will have to team up with each individual on that server for 15 rounds each, for a total of 45 rounds per server.

The top 2 players from each server will move on to the Round 2 "Champions Round" where they will compete to move on to Round 3. I want to have a lower echelon round as well so the "losers" from the first round can still play. It will be some sort of double-elimination, but I'm not positive yet how I'm going to set up the matches, so bear with me here. I'm open to suggestions for how to organize this.

When: Saturday, February 27, 2:00pm MST (which is 9:00pm GMT). You can see what it will be in your time zone when you sign in to the tournament here: http://www.galcon.com/iphone/tourney.php?action=view&tid=11

Let's find out who is the best individual 2v2 player in Galcon!

i don't now about everyone else...but i am completely against this...2v2 is about team play, not randomly being put with some noob and seeing if you can play with a noob better than someone else.  plus, i can see this backfiring somehow....idk, just my opinion. everyone probably disagrees with me but i'll definitely be one considering NOT to even bother playing in this tourney.

i love the idea. i think it´s just  interesting to see who is flexible enough to team with all kind of players . sure, its different from the tourneys as we know it. but hey, lets give it a try.

Nice.. Though it seems that it currently is a single-elimination system.

IonizedFire is right about one thing: 2v2 is a Team game, where the best Team wins, with their own tactics. Here, you'll have to adapt fast to your partner..

as nanno said, and others before (hint hint), the basic idea for this tourney is to find out who´s the best individual 2v2 player. bang. thats it. there will be other tourneys again. this one is just like this.

Maybe we could create a tournament email list, or use the mailing list to advertise tournaments. That second option is probably not a good idea, spam is evil incarnate... or not incarnate because its data or something. Anyway, a tournament email list would be very convenient. On the same subject, has anyone emailed gamma yet?

I totally agree with ionizedfire, it's hard enough to learn a partners strategy, but when your changing partners, it almost comes down to the team with the best starting position. Another downside is the fact that there are some players that I hate playing with. You will always have controvery, because everyone will blame their temporary partner for the loss.

NANNO

I suggest that doing a Best Player 2v2 isn't a bad idea but it is also based on luck and who your partner is. I'd rather do a 2v2 Tourney where you choose a partner, but I guess it'd be boring to most because it's the only tournaments you guys have done. I hope Phil works on making larger FFA rooms or maybe a 3v3? THAT WOULD ROCK! Or even a 2v2 2v2 2v2 or 4v4? But again future things that take a lot of work. Easy to say, hard to do.

Anyway I'll do the Tourney no matter what kind. I've never been in one and it'd be cool to be in one. Please note that this tournament if it stays the SAME then it will be luck on who your partner is unless you somehow even it out by PICKING it. Just my suggestions. Many will disagree with me here, but That's ok.

Thanks!

interesting concept.

4 players on a server, each playing 15 games with a different partner = 60 games a server.  (edit: nanno, 45 rounds??)

the 2 players with the most wins, move on to the next round.

youd have to arrange the "who goes where" after 10 games prior to starting, as the likelyhood of confusion is pretty high if not.

You guys complanning about everything as usual. I'm ready to play any tournament. This is the real galcon 2v2 world where you have to adapt fast to your teammate play style.
To me it's just an other day in paradise.
I don't understad those who complain about randomly playing with other players. This happens everytime you play 2v2 . Unless of course you are one of those annoying players that only team up with certain players. (go do your homework , this tourney is not for you )

Im 100% ready to play the tourney. I'm ready to team up with anyone for 15 games and then come back to kick your @ss the next 15 games lol.

Well this is getting mixed reactions! For those of you who don't like the idea of having to be flexible and team up with different partners, you can feel free to skip this tournament if you wish (although I say you are just a tad too picky!)

No.sound, a server of 4 players would be only 45 rounds, not 60 since you don't partner with yourself. ;)

For those who are thinking this means playing millions of games, rest assured that every player will not have to team with every other player. I'm thinking Round 1 will have 2 mini-rounds in which you play with 3 players in one server and then everyone switches to another server and plays 3 all new players (I have the pattern for this already worked out so nobody plays with the same person twice). This should eliminate several players who have ended up on the bottom bracket in both mini-rounds.

Round 2 will be all the people who have not been eliminated twice. I'm thinking we would divide up the players into servers in such a way that the players with no eliminations would battle each other and the players who have one elimination will also battle each other (thus continuing to narrow the field).

For those of you thinking this is a ton of games, I'm thinking that there is no reason for anyone to partner with someone twice. So if you end up in a server with two players who are new and one you partnered in a previous round, you would not have to team with the same player again, but only with the new ones. Towards the end we may have a few team repeats, but I'll try to work it out so as to keep these to a minimum.

If we have an odd man out it should be easier to rotate him in than in a proper 2v2 where everyone has a chosen partner. I would probably just put an odd player in the queue of one of the servers and each player would play 60 rounds instead of 45 and everyone in the server would have to sit out for one match.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about this and I think it will be a good time. You'll have to bear with me since this is all new, but I think we can make this work. And like Toomacho said, this is definitely a greater test of each player's skills since you are having to deal with the real-world problem of not having the best or most familiar teammate as your partner.

It should be 20 games with each partner; 15 is really low, and the scores are going to be pretty because luck will play an important part.

You know, I have only just worked it out, I joined the group thinking it was going to be 1v1 with 2 planets now reading everyones post its 2v2 where teams switch.
The "indervidual" part makes it so that people can switch.

I was going to try and make my friend who has galcon who has only played about 100 games in total play (just for the lolz) But now i realise if i get him to do really badly when against me and try his best when with me ( say 40% win) then if i lose a few games me and him will both get through to the next round. We would be unbeatable with each other. Likewise anyone can team up to play tacticly before hand in the chat. Once teams are chosen all you have to do is talk to someone and you will both end up going through.
and it would be easier to win when your teamed together. Rather than being teamed with someone who has only played 100 games

So 15 games are split into:

1: player 1 + 2 player 3 + 4
2: player 1 + 3 player 2 + 4
3: player 1 + 4 player 2 + 3

This way only 1 of the teamed players get to go through. because you have to take in effect the enemy team mate.
eg
if player 2 is going to let player 1 win,

1: 2:3
2: 5:0
3: 5:0

player 3 would come second even if you play around with the scores.

If the scores happened to be

1: 4:1

then you can try and make the scores

2: 3:2
3: 2:3

That way player 1 and 2 both get through. Its easy to lose games. So this could be a bad idea

The fact is, though, it's REALLY hard to hide it when someone is deliberately trying to make their teammate lose. Any halfway decent player can tell if his teammate is purposely making stupid moves, sitting still, not sending needed ships, etc. Especially when that same player was doing just fine with a different partner. We'll all be communicating in chat and I'll be right there ready to kick someone out of the game for being a dirty rotten cheater. I should hope no one in our community is so stupid, childish, selfish, and just plain idiotic as to stain their soul with the sin of treachery just for the sake of a silly tournament.
