This is my car, Edith:

This is the last thing that bear saw tonight:

Of course, poor Edith ain't doing too hot herself right now. The deer skull and antlers shattered into pieces (may have saved our radiator though), the grill shattered into even more pieces and left a gaping hole, the front panel on the driver's side is shoved back so the driver door won't open, and the strip along the front of the car is pushed back an inch over the hood so I can't open that either.

BUT, Edith is still running strong, losing no fluids, and didn't even bust any lights. It just goes to show you can't keep a good car down!

Here's the play-by-play breakdown of the event:

Phil and I were just leaving home to pick up his parents at the airport. It was about 10:15 p.m.
About three miles from our house a furry, pitch black object shot over the bank and hurtled out of the darkness on the left, straight into the front of our car.
It was about a 2-year old bear running full speed. I barely had time to slam the brakes so I was going about 55 mph when I hit it
The antlers splintered and scattered in every direction. The bear was knocked off his feet and went rolling head-over-heels in front of us.
I continued to hit the brakes, but we still overtook the tumbling bear.
Edith shot into the air like she was auditioning for a stunt car part in The A-Team as she launched right over the top of the unfortunate bear.
The bear rolled out from under the side of our car as we barreled by, and I was able to stop a short distance later.
I went up the road a little way to where I could turn around and when we got back to the place where the bear had been lying he was already gone. Hopefully he's ok somewhere. Bears are tough, but he got knocked pretty hard.
I put the hazards on and shined the headlights on the road while Phil picked up the pieces of shattered antlers, skull, and car parts.
We went home, called the Division of Wildlife to go look for the bear in case he needed to be put down, and picked up Phil's parents in the truck.
We were about 20 minutes late. But we had a good excuse.

Edit: When I hit the bear, Phil screamed like a little girl. I wish you could've heard him!

I could not have told this story before seeing as it happened last night. But I have posted pictures of my beautiful car before:

She does not look the same after last night's bear encounter. She has a huge hole where the antlers should be.

But on the plus side, Edith was pulling hard to the right and we were fixing to get her aligned. After she ran over the bear she drove away straight as an arrow.

That's crazy. Glad you guys are okay. Edith was the name of my high school math teacher, so when I read "Edith the Bear-Slayer", I immediately saw this image in my mind of my old math teacher wielding a sword and standing on top of a dead bear.
