first off, I don't want to urge Phil or anyone to bring an update/upgrade of Galcon out. I just want to share some ideas I had/have for Galcon.
I'll just call the new Galcon version 3.0 for now, as I see Galcon (Classic) as version 1 and Fusion as version 2.
My ideas:
Game matching:
Instead of having servers, why don't you make a big lobby where all players are first, and then if you click play, it will find all players that want to play that game mode and create a game lobby for you. It will find the best host (similar to how Call of Duty does it) and then you just start the game. That way it would also save server costs. If that's hard to implement, then just do the lobby and host the games on servers still.
Planet upgrades:
Add the ability to upgrade planets at the cost of ships. Maybe also add different types of planets (convert for ships). Defense planets that will shoot targets in range, planets that improve your ships (maybe kill +0.1 ships per planet, so if you have 3 planets of them you destroy 1.3 ships per ship). This would add a lot of strategy I think (and make long games not camp-only games). Of course, planets that aren't standard planets shouldn't produce ships anymore. However, you should be able to convert them back at the cost of some ships.
Game queue:
If you press play and every game lobby currently plays a game, your client will look at every lobby and join the one which ends the game first and has a free slot for you.
Level system:
Add levels to the game and unlockables with each level. Maybe new colors or planet designs, maybe also some extras that help you a little (+5 ships at start, +1 production per planet, +50% XP, -20% upgrade cost, +0.1 ship strenght etc.). You should be able to choose 2 extras (if you could choose all you unlocked it would be unfair for new players in my opinion).
Clan tagsSuggested by sidekick
Add clan tags, so people don't have to create new accounts just to add or change their clan.
